Leading with Faith and Intregity

Proverbs 12:15 "The way of the foolish is right in their own eyes, but the wise heeds counsel."

As leaders in Christian schools, we have a unique opportunity not only to develop student-athletes but also to shape character. We are entrusted with guiding them, molding their minds and hearts. In doing so, it is essential that we lead with faith and integrity.

Proverbs 12:15 reminds us that while our own perspectives may seem right to us, it is important to seek counsel and wisdom from others. By being open to feedback and advice, we can ensure that our decisions are aligned with our Christian values and principles.

Regularly seek guidance from spiritual leaders. Their input can provide valuable insights and help you make informed decisions. Lead by example, demonstrating the importance of faith and integrity in your own life. Get into a regular rhythm of praying for your student-athletes, your staff, and your school community. Seek God's guidance and wisdom in all that you do.

As we move into October, we ask God to give you guidance and wisdom, helping you to lead with faith and integrity and reflecting the love and grace of Christ.

Transformational vs. Transactional Athletics

The recent story of UNLV quarterback Matthew Sluka leaving the program due to a broken NIL promise shines a spotlight on the changing landscape of college athletics. While the world of big-money contracts and celebrity athletes dominates headlines, the true value of athletics often lies on a much smaller stage: our high schools.

High school athletics are about more than winning games. They provide a platform for developing student-athletes in a transformational manner, rather than a transactional one. In our roles, we wear many hats. We aren't just managing budgets and schedules; we are mentoring, coaching, and fostering a community of teamwork, sportsmanship, perseverance, and challenging our student-athletes to grow in their relationship with God.

The Bible reminds us in 1 Timothy 4:8 that "for physical training is of some value, but godliness is of value for all things, having the promise of the life that now is and also of the life to come." Christian-based athletics embody this principle. We do offer valuable physical training, but our true worth lies in shaping godly character and building skills that extend far beyond the playing field. Through this lens, we get to watch our student-athletes thrive as they bring our school's mission to life through the way they learn, practice, and compete.

We get to cultivate a culture of character, interweaving godly principles, sportsmanship, and respect into the fabric of our programs. We get to teach life skills that will go well beyond the game.

In a world increasingly dominated by the glitz and glamour of NIL deals and professional sports, it can be a challenge to continue to teach the value of high school athletics within a mission that fits your school.

To combat this, we must emphasize the unique benefits of our transformational programs. We can highlight personal and godly growth, character development, and lifelong friendships that are fostered through participation in our programs. By showcasing the positive impact our programs have on our communities, as leaders, we can help maintain their relevance in an ever-changing landscape.
