CfT Connection, March 15

Beyond the Brackets - Sharing Stories that Transform

Selection Sunday is almost here, and with it, the anticipation of March Madness, one of my favorite times of the year! As the brackets are filled and the games begin, we know the NCAA and media will weave compelling narratives. We'll hear stories of underdog teams, coaches with remarkable journeys, and student-athletes overcoming adversity. These stories aren't just entertainment; they're designed to connect us emotionally, draw us closer to the action, and remind us of the power of the human spirit.

These narratives create a sense of belonging and shared experience. This prompts me to consider how we, as leaders, can create similar connections within our programs. How can we share stories that resonate and reflect our school’s mission?

Here are a few suggestions:

  • The Power of Authentic Narrative: Just as the media highlights compelling stories, we can showcase the journeys of our coaches and student-athletes. These stories should be authentic, highlighting the values that drive them.

  • Connecting Through Shared Values: Our athletic programs are built on more than just winning. They are built on values like integrity, teamwork, Christ-centered and more. By sharing stories that exemplify these values, we can connect with families and the wider community on a deeper level.

  • Highlighting the Impact of Faith: As Christian athletic programs, we have a unique opportunity to share stories of how faith impacts the lives of our student-athletes and coaches. These stories can inspire others and demonstrate the transformative power of a relationship with Christ.

  • Building Community Through Storytelling: Storytelling builds a sense of community. When we share our stories, we invite others to join us on our journey. We create a space where people feel connected, valued, and inspired.

As we head into Selection Sunday and the upcoming NCAA tournament, I challenge you to:

  • Identify and share meaningful stories. Look for stories of resilience, faith, and character within your programs. Use your website, social media, and school events to share these stories.

  • Highlight your mission and vision. Ensure that your stories reflect the mission and vision of your school and connect the narratives to the values you are striving to instill in your athletic program.

  • Empower your student-athletes to share their voices, encouraging them to share their own stories, and highlighting their experiences and the lessons they have learned.

  • Create space for spiritual growth and encourage your student-athletes and coaches to cultivate their faith through team devotionals, prayer, and mentorship.

  • Remember to use the platform of athletics to share the hope and love of Christ with your community.

Let’s use the excitement of March Madness as a reminder of the power of storytelling. When we tell our own stories, we can build a stronger connection within our community, inspiring others and ultimately bringing glory to God through our athletic programs.

conference update

Thank you all for your valuable feedback regarding the proposed spring conference. We've heard you loud and clear: scheduling conflicts and the demands of the spring season make attending a conference during that time challenging for many.

Based on your responses, we've decided to shift our gathering to the summer. We believe this will provide greater flexibility and allow more of you to participate. We're committed to delivering a high-quality, impactful gathering that meets your needs.

We're currently exploring potential dates and locations during the summer months and will share those details as soon as they are finalized.
